The event promises to be a feast for the senses with a live performance delivered by Grammy-nominated Benjamin Lapidus, a Professor of Art and Music at John Jay College, and Christopher Washburne, a Professor of Music at Columbia University.
The event will occur on Tuesday, April 18th, 2023, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at John Jay College, conference room L61.

Decolonizing Criminology: Reckoning with the Legacy and Impact of Colonial Thought on Criminological Discourse, Crime, and Punishment

We invite you to participate in the Decolonizing Criminology Symposium, which seeks to reckon with the legacy and impact of colonial thought on criminology discourse, crime, and punishment.
It also offers an opportunity to deepen our understanding of how colonial legacies continue to shape criminology discourse and practice and to collaborate on ways to decolonize this field.
The symposium will occur at John Jay College, room 9.64NB, on Thursday, April 20th, from 9 am to 6 pm and will feature presentations, workshops, and panel discussions from distinguished scholars.
Participants will be able to engage in productive discussions and learn from experts in the field. The symposium is open to everyone interested, including academics, practitioners, students, and community members.

We invite you to a book talk on "Dissident Practices: Brazilian Women Artists 1960 to 2020" by Dr. Claudia Calirman, the Chair and Associate Professor of Art History at John Jay College.
The talk will take place on Wednesday, May 3rd, from 5.30 to 6.45 pm in room L.61, followed by an exhibition opening reception at Shiva Gallery at 7 pm.
The event will feature roundtable discussion by:
Julia Bryan-Wilson is a Professor of Contemporary Art and LGBTQ+ Studies at the Department of Art History and Archaeology and the Institute for the Study of Sexuality and Gender at Columbia University. She is the Curator-at-Large, at Museu de Arte de São Paulo.
André Lepecki is a Full Professor & Chair of the Department of Performance Studies
at Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. He is an essayist and independent curator based in New York City, and editor of several anthologies on dance and performance theory.
Vivian Crockett is a curator at the New Museum in New York and a Brazilian-American scholar focusing mainly on modern and contemporary art of African diasporas, Latinx diasporas, and the Americas at the varied intersections of race, gender, and queer theory.
Dissident Practices: Brazilian Women Artists, 1960s-2020s, explores how artists responded to social change. Although many of them in the 1960s and 1970s disavowed the term feminism, they still employed feminist strategies.

Recent OAR Book Talks
On April 17, 2019, Philip Yanos, Professor of Philosophy at John Jay College, was joined by Kim T. Mueser, clinical psychologist and professor at Boston University's Center for Psychiatric Rehabilitation, for a discussion of his book Written Off: Mental Health Stigma and the Loss of Human Potential.
On February 13, 2019, Mike Wallace, Distinguished Professor of History at John Jay College, held a book talk to discuss his book Greater Gotham: A History of New York City from 1898 to 1919.
