Training and Education

The Research Compliance and Integrity team in the Office for the Advancement of Research provides training and education on topics of relevance to the ethical conduct of research.  We hold regular workshops for the John Jay community as described below, and host special events with experts on various topics.  We also visit classes, lab meetings, and faculty meetings, and are available for consultation.  Get in touch to discuss how we can help you and your colleagues.

RESEARCH COMPLIANCE AND INTEGRITY WORKSHOPS:

We offer training on a variety of topics related to research compliance and integrity.  These workshops are currently hosted via Zoom and open to John Jay students, faculty and staff.  Please register in advance, submit any questions you hope to have answered, and get in touch with ideas for other workshops.

Demystifying the IRB: Tips for Navigating the IRB Application and Review Process

What is an "IRB"? Who is a "human subject"? Does my research require IRB review? How do I submit an IRB application? What happens during the IRB process? How long does it take? What happens after I get approval? What is informed consent? Learn the answers to these questions and more in this informative workshop.

The workshop is open to John Jay faculty, students and staff, and should be particularly useful to researchers who are unfamiliar with submitting an IRB application or new to conducting research with human subjects. Participants will learn about the IRB process and how to navigate the IRBManager system.

This monthly workshop is held on Fridays during Community Hour via Zoom.

Human Subjects Research Workshop Series:

This workshop series  for John Jay students, faculty and staff explores various topics relevant to research with human subjects.  We recommend that registrants have already completed the CITI Training in Human Subjects course relevant to their status and area of research; CITI training is required for anyone conducting research with human subjects and will provide a baseline understanding of some of the topics we’ll explore more deeply in this series.  More information about CITI training is available here.

New dates coming soon!  Sign up to be notified.

  • Informed Consent:  What is "informed consent" in the context of research with human subjects?   What does a consent process look like?  What is required in the IRB application?  What do research participants need to know to make an informed decision?  We will discuss the difference between a "waiver of documentation of informed consent" and a "waiver of consent", how to think about consent when research involves deception or "incomplete disclosure", broad consent, requirements when children will be enrolled, capacity to consent, and more.

  • Privacy and Confidentiality Considerations: What is the difference between “privacy” and “confidentiality”?  What is required in the IRB application?  What is allowed, recommended, expected, etc?  We will discuss special considerations for research conducted online, policies related to data management, expectations for data sharing, and more.

  • Vulnerability in Research:  What does "vulnerable" mean in the context of research with human subjects?   Are there specific populations or characteristics that are considered vulnerable? What does the IRB need to know and what are you expected to do if your research involves children?  What about prisoners?  What about students? We will discuss coercion and undue influence, the role of the researcher in protecting participants who may be considered vulnerable, and expectations for recruitment, consent, data collection, and more.

  • I have IRB approval - now what?   This workshop will discuss expectations, obligations and best practices for approved research with human subjects.  What is an Amendment and when is it required?  What if something goes wrong?  What is non-compliance? We will review CUNY policies, discuss requirements for informed consent and use of documents, envision a perfectly executed study, and discuss how to handle when things do not go according to plan.
