Peer Ambassador Leadership Program

The Peer Ambassador Program is dedicated to providing a comprehensive student leadership experience that fosters professional and personal development and encourages students to create leadership identities as individuals and as members of a teams. The Peer Ambassador Leadership Program is a paid leadership opportunity within the Division of Student Affairs. The program, housed in the office of Student Transition Programs, aims to develop students into strong leaderswho will "Educate for Justice" on campus and beyond. It provides an excellent opportunity for students to network at all levels of the College.

Student participants will gain the foundational framework to understand that “leadership is a process, not a position.”

Apply to be an Orientation Leader:
New Student Orientation Leaders (OL) will work with the Peer Ambassador Team Leaders and staff of the office of Student Transition Programs to implement the New Student Orientation program in the Spring. The primary role of an OL is to provide guidance to new students and facilitate Orientation activities. Orientation Leaders will develop meaningful relationships with others, gain practical competence to carry out duties successfully and develop an understanding of their personal leadership development.

Orientation Leaders will be expected to work 25 hours a week from January 3, 2022 to January 28, 2022. This position will work in a hybrid model.

New Student Orientation Leaders will gain significant leadership experience; develop professional relationships with faculty, staff, and students; and learn effective communication skills. In addition, New Student Orientation Leaders will receive a $1500 stipend, meals during the on campus work days, and Orientation sweatshirt/shirts.

Serving the Community

Peer Ambassadors are current undergraduate and graduate students who are selected to serve the John Jay community.  They provide relevant information to prospective students, family members, current students, faculty, staff and guests on all facets of campus life. Peer Ambassadors participate in a variety of activities including public relations programs, new student orientation, commencement, campus tours, special recruitment and retention events.

As greeters at special events for the President’s office, academic departments, as well as other departments including the Pre-Law Institute, Alumni Affairs and the office of Community Outreach & Service Learning, Peer Ambassadors make campus visitors feel welcome, comfortable, and engaged.

Requesting Peer Ambassadors to Work your On-Campus Event

To request Peer Ambassadors to assist with on-campus events, email at least 2 weeks prior to your event.  In your email, please include the name, date, time how many Peer Ambassadors you are requesting and a brief description of the duties the Peer Ambassadors will be doing.  Peer Ambassadors are not volunteering for these events, you are required to pay then $15.00 an hour.

Peer Ambassador requests will be approved on a case by case basis.

Please note that the use of the services of the Peer Ambassadors will not be approved for the following tasks. This list is not comprehensive.

  • Manual Labor such as setting up tables, moving heavy equipment, etc.
  • Posting flyers
  • Wait staff or standing behind buffet tables
  • Major setup and cleanup of events. Certainly a light amount may be acceptable

Ambassadors are selected based on their demonstration of leadership, campus involvement, and academic achievement. The program provides each Ambassador with opportunities for mentorship, leadership, and volunteerism, as well as further increasing competencies in personal and career development. Applicants are interviewed by a screening committee comprised of cross-campus representatives. Approximately 20 talented and enthusiastic students will be chosen each year. We only recruit at the end of the spring semester, with summer training, for the following academic year.

  • Must be enrolled full-time
  • Have successfully completed at least 12 credits at the College
  • Hold a minimum 2.8 GPA, 3.0 preferred

Interested graduate students:

  • Must be enrolled full-time
  • Have successfully completed at least 12 credits at the College
  • If the graduate student has completed their undergraduate degree at John Jay, they must have graduated with a 3.0 GPA to participate as a first semester graduate student

In addition to the above requirements, all applicants should:

  • Demonstrate the following criteria which will be reflected in your resume, interest letter, and letters of recommendation
  • Demonstrated leadership experience (on or off campus)
  • Possess strong interpersonal skills including effective communication, the ability to be self- motivated, a commitment to professionalism, etc.
  • Demonstrate commitment to participate in ongoing training/meetings
  • Possess a dedication to the group and ability to commit necessary time as described
  • Possess a sincere desire to represent John Jay College
  • Ability to adapt to a variety of situations
  • Ability to work well with others
  • Possess a sincere passion for increasing school spirit, pride, and tradition on campus
